The Indian High School, IHS, TIHS. IHS is the first expatriate educational institution to be established in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 1957 at which point it was called Bharatiya Vidyalaya. The land on which the School is located was granted to the School by the Late Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

The school was established in 1961 with a view to providing education to children of Indian expats. The school is recognized by the Ministry of Education, Dubai, and is permanently affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi. It is a member of Dubai Quality Group and has acquired Certification. The certification by Lloyds Register of Britain acknowledges the quality management system and the contribution of the Indian community-run school in giving international quality education to expatriates. The school has also received Sheikh Rashid bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Distinguished School and School Administration (2002).

Today the school as grown from its initial enrollment of 8 students to over 8,200 students. The centerpiece of the School complex is the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium, which can accommodate about 1800 guests and which has been the venue of many significant events.

The school is closely involved with the activities of the entire academic community in Dubai, and has special programmes aimed at creating awareness of the environment, and enhancing ethical values. IHS is an English medium school which caters to Indian students and operates under the CBSE pattern of secondary education.

Location

The school operates in two separate campuses, one for the junior school and the other for the senior school. The junior branch is located in Garhoud and the Senior branch (Main school) is located in Oud Metha.

A new campus in Dubai's elite section, Dubai Silicon Oasis is currently under construction.

Facilities

There are a number of libraries and laboratories for reference work and research work respectively. The school also has a counseling center, school radio broadcasting named "Recess Radio" and medical facilities as well.

Recess Radio

It is the school's own radio station brodcasted to the students during Recess Time.It includes a variety of programs like Singstar, Song Request Time, Gadget News and the latest Buzz.

Laboratories

The school has well equipped separate laboratories for physics, biology, chemistry, home science, computer science and engineering drawing and fashion designing. Qualified and experienced instructors are available in each of the laboratories in order to provide personal guidance to the students.

chool Transport

The school has a fleet of about 88 air conditioned buses which access different areas of Dubai for the benefit of staff and students. Children are picked up and dropped off at the appointed bus stops which are determined after a detailed survey of the area and bearing in the mind the safety and security of the child.

Publications

The school brings out a number of publications; here are some of them:

*The School brings out a quarterly journal called "Light House"
*The School magazine entitled "The Indian", containing contributions from the teachers and the taught. This medium has been instrumental in developing literary, artistic and aesthetic talents of students of different age groups.
*"The Miscellany" also gives an annual report of activities conducted and the progress made by the school in different areas. News bulletins are issued quarterly to supply required information to parents/ guardians and apprise them of activities of School.
*A journal on environmental issues called "Eco feel".
*A year book giving details of the out-going batch

Canteen

The school provides refreshment for the staff and students at reasonable rates in the School Canteen, which is maintained under very hygienic conditions.Prices for drinks and eatables range from Dhs.0.50 - Dhs.3.50. Students can also enjoy their meal by watching news and sports during recess at their school canteen.

Counseling Centre

The Indian High School is the first of the CBSE Schools in the Gulf to recognise the importance of school counseling and set up a Counseling and Guidance Centre in the main school premises in 1988 with one qualified counselor. Today the centre has four professionally qualified counselors and three units. One in the Branch school which meets the needs of students of Kindergarten to grade 4, one in the C Block that caters to the needs of students in grades 5 to 7 and one in A Block for Senior students (Grade 8 - 12). The Counselors provide guidance to student's parents and teachers in a confidential and congenial atmosphere. The center is equipped with the latest career guidance material from India, USA, Canada, U.A.E and Australia

Staff and Students

Mr. Ashok Kumar is the CEO of IHS. He has been awarded the Sheikh Hamdan Award for Best Administrator and the Indian National Award for Teachers by the Indian Government. The school currently has about 650 teachers (and 200 other working staff) teaching about 8200 students, being one of the largest schools in the region.

Student's Council

The Indian High School has a well organised Student's Council from the Junior to the Senior levels.The student's Council is headed by the Head Boy and Head girl and are assisted by their fellow council members.A typical Student's council consists of the Head Boy/Girl, Council Secretary, Cultural Secy., Asst. Cultural Secy., Sprts Secretary, Asst. Sports Sec., House Captains and Vice Captains.

The list includes: Abdul Kalam (11th President of India), Shashi Tharoor (Contestant for the post of "Secretary General" of the U.N.), Sania Mirza (Indian Tennis player), A.C. Milan (football soccer club), Venu Rajamony (Indian Council General in Dubai), Anil Kumble (Indian Cricketer), Sonali Bendre, Kailash Kher, Shaan, Roop Kumar Rathod.
