- André Thouin
André Thouin (
February 10 ,1746 -October 24 ,1824 ) was a Frenchbotanist who was born inParis . He studiedbotany underBernard de Jussieu (1699-1777). In 1793 Thouin attained the chair ofhorticulture atMuséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris. Thouin was a good friend of U.S. PresidentThomas Jefferson , and his younger brotherGabriel Thouin (1747-1829) was a noted landscape architect. He was also the Godfather ofJean Baptiste Lamarck 's son Andre.Thouin is remembered for his contributions made in the field of
agronomy , and his scientific work concerning improvedgrafting techniques and seed selection. He was also a pioneer conservationalist, stressing the importance of replacing woodlands to compensate for their destruction due to human encroachment.Selected publications
