André Thouin

André Thouin (February 10, 1746 - October 24, 1824) was a French botanist who was born in Paris. He studied botany under Bernard de Jussieu (1699-1777). In 1793 Thouin attained the chair of horticulture at Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris. Thouin was a good friend of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, and his younger brother Gabriel Thouin (1747-1829) was a noted landscape architect. He was also the Godfather of Jean Baptiste Lamarck's son Andre.

Thouin is remembered for his contributions made in the field of agronomy, and his scientific work concerning improved grafting techniques and seed selection. He was also a pioneer conservationalist, stressing the importance of replacing woodlands to compensate for their destruction due to human encroachment.
