- Seatrain (band)
Seatrain was a
jazz fusion band fromNew York that was formed after the breakup ofBlues Project . They are best known for their top 50 hit "13 Questions"Band history
Flutist /bassist Andy Kulberg anddrummer Roy Blumenfeld of Blues Project formed the band with Jim Roberts, ex-Mystery Trend guitarist John Gregory, former Jim Kweskin Jug Band violinist Richard Greene, and saxophonist Don Kretmar. They released their first album, "Planned Obsolescence", in 1968, but had to release it as Blues Project for contractual reasons. They released a self-titled LP in 1969, but faced a major change in membership a few months later. By the time they released a second self-titled album in 1970, Blumenfeld, Gregory, and Kretmar had been replaced by drummer Larry Atamanuik, keyboardist Lloyd Baskin, andEarth Opera guitaristPeter Rowan . "13 Questions " was released from the album as a single, and became a minor hit in the US, hitting #49 on the national chart. Other outstanding cuts include a knock-out rendition of Lowell George's "Willin'", a vocally splendid song entitled "Out Where The Hills", and a raucous electric version of "Orange Blossom Special".George Martin produced the album, marking the very first time he had acted in that capacity with a rock act since his seminal work with the Beatles. He also produced Seatrain's much-anticipated follow-up album, "Marblehead Messenger", but Rowan and Greene left the band soon after to formMuleskinner while Roberts and Atamanuik joined the backing band ofEmmylou Harris . Kulberg and Baskin replaced these members with guitarist Peter Walsh, keyboardist Bill Elliot, and drummer Julio Coronado, but only released one more album, 1973's "Watch".Discography
