George Richardson (VC)

George Richardson VC (August 1, 1831 - January 28, 1923) was born in Derrylane, Killyshandra, County Cavan and was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Details

He was 27 years old, and a private in the 34th Regiment (later The Border Regiment), British Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 27 April 1859 at Kewane Trans-Gogra, India, Private Richardson, although severely wounded in one arm, closed with and secured an armed rebel sepoy.

He later achieved the rank of sergeant. He died London, Ontario, Canada, 28 January 1923.
