Sacred Nagi Tree of Kumano Hayatama Taisha

Situated in Shingu city, Wakayama, Japan. Kumano Hayatama Taisha is one of three Kumano Sanzan temple sites, and is part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated World Heritage Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.

At this Shinto/Buddhist unification site lives the sacred nagi tree, a living tree worshipped in the Buddhist religion as being pure and good. The nagi tree, Nageia nagi, is also called the broadleaf podocarpus.
