Alexis Charles Doxat

Alexis Charles Doxat (9 April 1867-29 November 1942) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Details

He was 33 years old, and a lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry during the South African War (Boer War) when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 20 October 1900 near Zeerust, South Africa, Lieutenant Doxat, with a party of mounted infantry was reconnoitring a position held by 100 Boers on a ridge of kopjes. When the enemy opened a heavy fire on the reconnaissance party they had to retire, but Lieutenant Doxat, seeing that one of his men had lost his horse, galloped back under very heavy fire and took him on his own horse to a place of safety. He later achieved the rank of major in the King's Royal Rifle Corps in World War I.
