Alfred Stowell Jones

Alfred Stowell Jones VC (Liverpool 24 January 1832 - Finchampstead 29 May 1920) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Details

Jones was born in Liverpool and educated at Liverpool College. He was 25 years old, and a lieutenant in the 9th Lancers, British Army during the Indian rebellion of 1857 when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 8 June 1857 at Delhi, India, Lieutenant Jones, with his squadron, captured one of the enemy's guns, killing the drivers, and then, with help from a lieutenant colonel, turned it upon a village occupied by the rebels, and dislodged them.
