George Edward Cates

George Edward Cates

George Edward Cates VC (May 9, 1892 – March 9, 1917) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

He was 24 years old, and a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own), British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 8 March 1917 east of Bouchavesnes, France, Second Lieutenant Cates was engaged with some other men in deepening a captured trench when his spade stuck a buried bomb which immediately started to burn. Without hesitation he put his foot on it and it immediately exploded. This act cost him his life, but saved the lives of others with him.

His Victoria Cross is displayed at the Royal Green Jackets Museum, Winchester, England.
