Ireland is the name of the state with jurisdiction over the southern and western five-sixths of the island. It has the additional description, "The Republic of Ireland.
Northern Ireland is that part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland that has jurisdiction over the remaining (north-eastern) one-sixth of the island.
