Quilter was born in
England and now lives in theCanary Islands . He started his career as a television presenter on BBC TV. His first play was an all-female comedy "Respecting Your Piers" (published by Samuel French) and he followed this with a musical adaptation ofOscar Wilde ´s "The Canterville Ghost " which played a number one tour of the UK starringRon Moody . The following year, he made his West End debut with a comedy about the pop industry, "BoyBand". The show played a summer season at theGielgud Theatre and later enjoyed success inSouth Africa ,Denmark and on a 60-venue tour of theNetherlands .In 2005, Quilter had his first big international hit with "End of the Rainbow", a musical drama about the final months in the life of
Judy Garland . It premiered to rave reviews at theSydney Opera House in Australia (winningCaroline O'Connor two Best Actress awards) and also had an award-winning run at the 2006Edinburgh Festival . The following year, Joop van den Ende presented a new Dutch production which played to packed houses on a seven-month tour and the show has since enjoyed runs in theCzech Republic ,Finland ,Poland andNew Zealand ."Glorious!" also received its debut production in 2005, opening at the
Duchess Theatre in the West End, starring the comedy actressMaureen Lipman and produced by Michael Codron. "Glorious!" told the hilarious and poignant story ofFlorence Foster Jenkins , the world's worst singer. It was an instant success, running in London for six months and over 200 performances. It was nominated for the prestigiousLaurence Olivier Award as Best New Comedy. "Glorious!" made its North American debut atTheatre Calgary (starringNicola Cavendish ) and had its first foreign language production at the Helsinki City Theatre, under the title "Suurenmoista!" It is currently playing worldwide, including various cities inGermany ,Poland ,Canada and theUSA .Peter Quilter´s latest play is "Duets", a comedy for a cast of only two actors, which will receive its first productions in 2009. The Australian Premiere will be on August 20th 2009 at the Ensemble Theatre in Sydney. The European premiere is likely to be the production presented by Studio DVA in June 2009 in Prague. The country and venue for the official World Premiere is still in discussion, but likely to take place next May.
