The first
Tenshukaku donjon ofEdo Castle was constructed in the time of the 2ndTokugawa Shogun Hidetada in1607 , and is was completed under the 3rd shogunTokugawa Iemitsu in1638 , following the course of large-scale repairs carried out in1622 .Standing 58 meters tall above the ground, five storied building outside, six stories within, it was the highest
donjon ever built inJapan and symbolized the authority of theTokugawa Shogunate . It was burnt down in theconflagration of1657 , only 19 years after completion, and it has never since been reconstructed.Today the stone constructed base of this
donjon is tourist attraction atTokyo central park open for the public.
