He was 39 years old, and a
major in the14th Hussars ,British Army during theSouth African War (Boer War) when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.On
13 October 1900 at Geluk,South Africa , Major Brown, seeing that the horse of one of the sergeants had been shot, helped the man up behind him and carried him for about three-quarters of a mile to a place of safety. He did this under heavy fire. Afterwards he helped a lieutenant to mount his horse which was very restive under heavy fire - the officer could not have mounted without this help. Later, Major Brown carried a wounded lance-corporal out of action to safety.Further information
