He was born in
Cantu , within theArchdiocese of Milan . He was educated atSt. Peter MartyrSeminary inVenegono and the in Theological Faculty, Milan. He was ordained to the priesthood on the last day of 1947 inMilan , byAlfredo Schuster thenArchbishop ofMilan . He taught at the archiepiscopal school inDesio from 1947 till 1949. After further studies inRome he was a faculty member at the Seminary ofVenegono from 1952 until 1967. After this he worked as a parish priest doingpastoral work in the archdiocese of Milan until 1982. He was named Prelate of honour of His Holiness on24 April 1979 .Episcopate
Pope John Paul II appointed himtitular bishop of Gaudiaba and appointed him as anauxiliary bishop of Milan on10 November 1984 . He wasconsecrated that December by CardinalCarlo Maria Martini , assisted by CardinalGiovanni Colombo , (then ArchbishopEmeritus of Milan). He remained as a bishop of Milan until he was appointed as [Archbisop of Turin on31 January 1989 .Cardinalate
He was created and proclaimed
Cardinal Priest of "Sacro Cuore di Gesù a Castro Pretorio " (deaconry elevatedpro hac vice to title) in theconsistory ofJune 28 1991 . He resigned the pastoral government of the archdiocese because of bad health, at the age of 74 on19 June 1999 . Since his resignation he resides in the parish of S. Francesco di Paola, via Montenapoleone. He lost the right to participate in a conclave when he turned 80 years old in 2004.
