] They include scientists, planners, administrators, ecological consultants, first peoples, landscape architects, natural areas managers, philosophers, teachers, engineers, writers, growers, community activists, volunteers, and others.

SER International has members in 37 countries and all 50 US states, with 14 chapters serving regions of North America, Europe, Australia, and India. Recognized by public and private enterprises as a major source for expertise on restoration science, practice and policy, SER's worldwide membership collaboratively works with many partner organizations to achieve objectives. SER International is a registered not-for-profit organization under Section 501(c)3 of the US Internal Revenue Code, and all contributions are fully tax-deductible.

SER International does not itself engage in restoration projects; its mission is:

:"to promote ecological restoration as a means of sustaining the diversity of life on Earth and reestablishing an ecologically healthy relationship between nature and culture."Fact|date=August 2008

To these ends, SER International serves the growing field of ecological restoration by facilitating dialogue among restorationists; encouraging research; promoting awareness of and public support for restoration and restorative management; contributing to public policy discussions; recognizing people who have made outstanding contributions to the restoration field; and, of course, promoting ecological restoration around the world through:

Conferences for members to exchange ideas and information, and to participate in SER workshops, fieldtrips, and other activities. SER hosts and co-sponsors several conferences a year, and many SER chapters offer regional conferences and meetings.

Journals have steadily defined and refined the field. SER's quarterly scientific and technical journal "Restoration Ecology" ("RE", 1993-Present) [cite web

RE includes research on restoration and ecological principles that help explain restoration processes, descriptions of author-pioneered techniques that other practicing restorationists may adapt and use, and reviews of articles that summarize literature on specialized aspects of restoration. The quarterly practitioner's guide "Ecological Restoration" ("ER", 1981-Present; known as "Restoration & Management Notes" 1981-1998) [cite web
