- Gieve Patel
Gieve Patel was born in 1940 in
Mumbai (Bombay). He practised to be a general physician he is a self-taught artist, a poet and a playwright.He held his first show in Mumbai in 1966 and went on to have several major exhibitions in
India and abroad. Patel participated in theMenton Biemale, France in 1976 India, Myth and Reality, Oxford in 1982; Contemporary Indian Art, Royal Academy, London 1982.He has also exhibited for Contemporary Indian Art, Grey Art Gallery, New York, 1985, Indian Art from the Herwitz collection Worcester Art Museum,
Massachusetts , 1985 and 'Coups de Coeur'Geneva , 1987.The human situation with its rough edges which are at the same time not devoid of poetry are transmuted on the canvasses of Gieve Patel. Acutely conscious of the ordinary man his figures are often set within cityscapes and as they go about performing their chores, there is close observation of their clothes, postures and stances. The brush with reality allows the painter to then explore its complex facets.
Patel lives and works in Mumbai.
He has been conductng a poetry workshop in
Rishi Valley School for over a decade. Recently, he edited a collection of poetry which was published as a book (in 2006) and is doing well.Works
