Frontenac Secondary School

Frontenac Secondary School is a high school located in the Auden Park area of Kingston, Ontario. It offers grades 9-12.

History

Frontenac was built in 1957 as Collins Bay High School, changing its name in 1964. Frontenac's enrolment is around 1200 (with space for only 400 in some areas). In May 2007, Frontenac celebrated its 50th anniversary. Starting in the beginning of 06-07 year, construction began on a major extension, including a brand-new library, a large media room, an elevator, and several other new classrooms.

Athletics

Frontenac is provincially known in Ontario and nationally in Canada for its outstanding athletics program (its mascot is the Falcon).Fact|date=July 2008 During the 1970s and continuing to present day the Falcons have been one of the most dominant high school football programs in Ontario and one of the most accomplished athletic programs in Canada achieving a national high school ranking in football in the 2000s. The senior Falcons were coached during those 30 years by coaches Pat McMenamin, Jack Aldridge and the late Berk Breen.

The Falcon football program has produced numerous of CIS players, All Canadians and also Vanier Cup participants and champions including Quarterback Warren Goldie who led the University of Western Ontario mustangs to the Vanier Cup in 1994. The Falcon women's basketball program was most dominant in the 1980 and 1990's under legendary Falcon coach Tim McCue winning numerous city and regional championships and also provincial medals. During the 90's and 2000's the men's basketball program has enjoyed notable success with city, regional and provincial titles.

Frontenac also has strong programs in volleyball including 10 straight city championships for the men's junior program in the late 80's and early 90's. Frontenac has also been a force in Track and Field producing athletes who have participated on Canada's national team in the Olympic Games.

On December 4, 2007, the Frontenac senior football team won the National Capital Bowl Championship at Varsity Stadium in Toronto, defeating Crestwood Secondary School of Peterborough by a score of 15-10. This victory marks the third National Capital Bowl victory for Frontenac in the last 7 years (the first championship since winning consecutive championships in 2001 and 2002).

Frontenac has had a very strong hockey program in the 2000s. They have represented EOSSA at OFSAA twice and have always been a contender in league and tournament play. They have traveled all over Ontario to play in tournaments.

Music

Throughout the 1970s, 80's and 90's Frontenac was known for its outstanding music program which won numerous competitions and festivals throughout Canada. Many music graduates from this time went on to careers in the music industry as professional players, recording artists and music educators. The rock group the "Blushing Brides" was formed at Frontenac.

There are currently two music instructors at FSS: Ian Juby and Kelli Caravan.

Other programs

Frontenac also has respected math, art, and social science programs. The school has a strong languages program, including French, Spanish, and German programs, and several languages certificates.

Frontenac is the one of the few Kingston Area high schools to offer AP programs, both AP Calculus and AP Computer Science are offered in 2008.

It is also one of the only schools in the Limestone District School Board to have a Junior "Reach for the top" trivia team, and a strong Senior "Reach" team as well.

John Tripp, Professional Ice Hockey player, Playing in German League.

Wayne Cashman, Retired Canadian professional ice hockey player, former NHL head coach currently an assistant coach of the Boston Bruins.

Warren Goldie, Quarterback University of Western Ontario. Led Mustangs to the Vanier Cup in 1994

Robert Tallack, Martial arts champion.
