"General Spanky" is a 1936 motion picture produced by Hal Roach. Its the 150th Our gang episode made and originally released to theatres on December 11, 1936 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

Notes

"General Spanky" was based in the Civil War period. It was also the one agreed feature per year that Hal Roach agreed to produce for MGM. It was also intended as an experiment to determine if Roach could move "Our Gang" into features, as the double feature and block booking were slowly smothering his short subjects production. The film was such a box office disappointment that MGM determined that Roach would no longer have to produce any more features with Our Gang but would instead produce the usual amount of one reelers plus one two reeler for the 1937 to 1938 season and the 1938 to 1939 season.

At the end of the 1938 to 1938 season, Roach announced that he would end Our Gang after one more year of shorts production, Roach ended up selling the "Our Gang" unit to MGM in May of 1938.

The film is also not part of the syndicated Little Rascals television package and never was. In fact, when Hal Roach bough back the rights of the films he produced for MGM, General Spanky was not included and MGM continued to retain ownership of this film. It was syndicated with the 52 MGM produced Our Gang episodes. Its also never been released on DVD but was available in the 1990's on VHS.
