From an early age he had a great interest in the coaching side of the game, beginning in 1973 when he started training the Galway minor inter-county team at the young age of twenty-three. This was a starting point for Farrell, and in 1978 he guided his native-county to All-Ireland success at under-21 level. Two years later Farrell had possibly his most exciting victory when he managed Galway to its first senior All-Ireland title since 1923. Three years later in 1983 he led the men from the west to a first All-Ireland title at minor level. Between 1985 and 1990 Farrell steered Galway to two further senior All-Ireland victories as well as two National Hurling League titles.
