as_of = July 25, 2007The AVR reactor (German: "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Versuchsreaktor") was a prototypepebble bed reactor atJülich Research Centre inWest Germany . Construction began in1960 , first grid connection was in1967 and operation ceased in1988 .It was 17MWe, 40 MWt, and was used to develop and test a wide variety of fuels and machinery over its lifetime.
