Ryther cum Ossendyke

Ryther cum Ossendyke is a village hamlet 6 miles from Tadcaster and 6 miles from Selby, North Yorkshire, England.

Ryther is the site of a 13th century church, methodist chapel, a popular public house and a new village hall. It sits adjacent to Nun Appleton Hall. The village once boasted of several small shops and many farms. Census' returns show how many residents were farm labourers or had jobs in the village of Cawood. There were two poplular public houses, but now only one remains.With the hamlet sat on the river Wharfe, it has often been at risk of flooding. Sometimes cutting the villagers off from passing through. There are also great ings at Ossendyke.The Hamlet of Ryther has always been a small knit community with the same generations of families living close-by. It has been blessed that it hasn't been tainted by development over the years. Ossendyke has few houses and residents barely have a neighbour close by. Backing onto Ossendyke is the Church Fenton Airbase which is frequently used by both small light aircraft and practising jets.
