Hellmayr was born in
Vienna and studied at theUniversity of Vienna . After his studies he worked in Vienna, Munich, Berlin, Paris, Tring (GB) and in Chicago.In 1908 he was appointed Curator of the Bird Department at the Munich Museum, where he became a specialist in Neotropical birds, studying
Johann Baptist von Spix 's collection of Brazilian birds.main work
In 1922 he was made Curator in Zoology at the
Field Museum inChicago . He stayed there till 1931. His books included 13 of the 15 volumes of the "Catalogue of Birds of the Americas" (1918-1949) and "The Birds of Chile" (withHenry Boardman Conover ).1931 he went back to Vienna. In 1938 he emigrated first to England and then to Switzerland. He died in 1844 in Orselina in Switzerland.
