Marsa al Burayqah

Marsa al Burayqah

Marsa al Burayqah (also known as 'Brega') is situated in Libya on the Gulf of Sirte, the most Southerly point of the Mediterranean Sea.

Industry

There is an oil refinery belonging to and run by Sirte Oil Company, which is a subsidiary of the state owned National Oil Corporation (NOC). During the 1960’s and 1970's it was run in partnership with the international oil company, Esso. By the early 80’s, Esso had left, passing full control over to Sirte Oil Company.

Facilities

For the casual tourist, the cross roads at its 2 entrances provide a few shops and internet cafe's to break the journey between Sirte and Benghazi. A few miles North East along the coast lies a major residential area for the refinery (called Area 3 or New Brega).

Transport

The refinery has an airport with daily flights to Tripoli and in 2000 there was a plane crash leaving 22 dead on an inbound flight.
