Marsa al Burayqah (also known as 'Brega') is situated in
Libya on theGulf of Sirte , the most Southerly point of theMediterranean Sea .Industry
There is an
oil refinery belonging to and run bySirte Oil Company , which is a subsidiary of the state ownedNational Oil Corporation (NOC). During the 1960’s and 1970's it was run in partnership with the international oil company,Esso . By the early 80’s, Esso had left, passing full control over to Sirte Oil Company.Facilities
For the casual tourist, the cross roads at its 2 entrances provide a few shops and internet cafe's to break the journey between
Sirte andBenghazi . A few miles North East along the coast lies a major residential area for the refinery (called Area 3 orNew Brega ).Transport
The refinery has an
airport with daily flights toTripoli and in 2000 there was a plane crash leaving 22 dead on an inbound flight.ources
