TVBS is a satellite television channel and nationwide cable TV network in Taiwan, launched on September 28, 1993. It was established by TVBI Company Limited (TVBI), a subsidiary of Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) in Hong Kong, and ERA Group of Taiwan, and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Television Broadcasts Limited of Hong Kong in early 2005.

In the media, this was viewed by some as an attempt to intimidate TVBS from constantly criticizing the Democratic Progressive Party and the government led by President Chen Shui-bian.

TVBS channels

TVBS operates 4 channels:
* TVBS (flagship channel)
* TVBS-G
* TVBS-NEWS
* TVBS-Asia (broadcast outside Taiwan)

Controversy

* Republic of China (Taiwan) Government Information Office (GIO) head Pasuya Wen-chih Yao claims TVBS violated Republic of China media ownership laws, requiring that a foreign juristic person should not DIRECTLY own majority shares of local satellite channels. On November 1, 2005, the announced a fine of NT$1 million against TVBS and ordered that it comply with the ownership rules in a practical timeframe, and afterwards TVBS appealed to Executive Yuan against Yao's decision. TVBS stated that TVB held majority ownership of the company by a local juristic person. Executive Yuan announced that TVBS's ownership models is legal and GIO are required to return the fine.

* Bitumen duck incident (瀝青鴨事件): happened on Dec 29, 2006. Although TVBS apologized, the incident had already caused damage to the duck industry. [zh icon [http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/070417/17/d12c.html T台醜聞/綠營率鴨農向TVBS提出賠償 至少求償3.5億元] , "ETtoday", 2007/04/17]
