Massachusetts onJanuary 14 1793 . He pursued preparatory studies and graduated fromWilliams College ,Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1811. He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Hamilton, New York; moved to Bainbridge, New York, about 1818; district attorney 1823 - 1827; elected as a Jacksonian to the20th United States Congress (March 4 1827 -March 3 1829 ); elected as a Democrat to the25th United States Congress (March 4 1837 -March 3 1839 ), but changed his politics on the appearance of PresidentMartin Van Buren ’s message in 1837 favoring an independent Treasury; reelected as a Whig to the 26th and 27th Congresses (March 4 1839 -March 3 1843 ); served as First Auditor of the Treasury,August 2 1849 -October 31 1849 ; moved toChemung County, New York and engaged in the lumber business; died inElmira, New York onOctober 25 1852 ; interment in St. Peter’s Churchyard, Bainbridge, New York.External links
