Viktor Schmieden (
19 January 1874 - 1945) was a Germansurgeon who was born inBerlin . In 1897 he earned his medical doctorate from theUniversity of Bonn , and subsequently worked in hospitals inGöttingen , Berlin andBonn . Later he was a professor at Halle (1913) andFrankfurt am Main (1919).Schmieden is remembered for his work with
Franz Volhard (1872-1950) concerning the establishment ofpericardectomy for the treatment ofconstrictive pericarditis . Historically this procedure was referred to as "Schmieden's operation". In 1926 he identified that polyps of the colon were a precursor ofcolorectal cancer . Schmieden also made important contributions in regards to the treatment ofhydrocephalus .Schmieden was a prolific writer; with
Ernst Ferdinand Sauerbruch (1875-1951) he published the sixth edition of August Karl Gustav Bier's "Chirurgische Operationslehre" (Surgical Operation Teachings).References
