Militia battalion of theWorcestershire Regiment in 1895. He later transferred to the Regular Army and was promotedCaptain in 1901. In theFirst World War , Winnington was promotedLieutenant-Colonel in 1915. As well as being awarded the DSO, he wasmentioned in despatches four times.
