Elenita Binay

Dr. Elenita S. Binay (born 1944 in Manila, Philippines) also known as Ellen is the former mayor of Makati City serving from 1998 to 2001 and the current spouse of Makati City Mayor Jejomar C. Binay. They have several children, two of whom are casting their lots into the political ring. She is the mother of Makati City 1st District councilor Jejomar "Junjun" Binay, Jr. and 2nd District of Makati Rep. Mar-len Abigail "Abby" Binay.

Political Life

Mayor of Makati (1998-2001)

Mrs. Binay, though employed as a medical practitioner, ran and won as Mayor of the afore-cited city after her husband vacated the post. Her term, though, was marred by controversy. Mrs. Binay, along with her husband, Jejomar, is facing corruption charges arising from the so-called "Rockwell Bridge scandal".

Elenita Binay's (and private businessmen Li Yee Shing, Jason Li and Vivian M. Edurise, and Ernesto Aspillaga's) arraignment for graft charges was set by the Sandiganbayan's 4th Division on January 18, 2008. Binay was charged of alleged anomalous purchase of office fixtures and furniture for the new Makati City Hall from private contractor Office Gallery International from December 1999 to February 2000, regarding the acquisitions worth P 13.25 million overpriced by P3.6 million.
