Jim English was born in
Ballindoney ,County Wexford in 1932. Son of Thomas & Mary Kate, Brothers Paddy, Tommy, Matty, John, Joe & Sisters Maggie (Rowe) Maureen (Walsh) He grew up on the family farm and from a young age he showed a great interest in the game ofhurling . English was educated locally and later attendedNew Ross CBS where he first tasted hurling success.Playing career
Club
English played his club hurling with the famous Rathnure club in Wexford. He enjoyed much success year over a fifteen-year career at senior level. English later transferred to the Erin’s Own club in
Muine Bheag .Inter-county
English first played for Wexford in the 1950 Leinster minor championship against Kilkenny. The following year he joined the senior side and was a substitute when Wexford won the Leinster Championship title, however, they were beaten by Tipperary in the All-Ireland final. Three years later in 1954 English was a full member of the team. That year he won his first Leinster title, however, Wexford lost out to Cork in the All-Ireland final. In 1955 he captured his second provincial title. Once again Wexford qualified for the All-Ireland final, however, on this occasion English ended the day with an All-Ireland medal following a win over Galway.
In 1956 English was captain of Wexford as his native-county claimed a
National Hurling League title and a third Leinster title in-a-row. Wexford later played Cork in one of the most famous All-Ireland finals of all-time. It was the day that anArt Foley save deniedChristy Ring a ninth All-Ireland medal. English, on the other hand, ended the day with a second All-Ireland medal. In 1958 he won his second National League medal before winning a fourth Leinster medal in 1960. That year English also captured his third All-Ireland medal following a win over Tipperary. In retirement from play English maintained a keen interest in hurling. In 1972 he was elected Leinster Council delegate for Carlow, serving in that position until 1992. That year English became Chairman of the Carlow County Board.
