Jim English (October, 1932-23 February, 2008) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with the Wexford senior inter-county team from 1952 until 1964. He is regarded as one of Wexford’s greatest-ever players.

Early life

Jim English was born in Ballindoney, County Wexford in 1932. Son of Thomas & Mary Kate, Brothers Paddy, Tommy, Matty, John, Joe & Sisters Maggie (Rowe) Maureen (Walsh) He grew up on the family farm and from a young age he showed a great interest in the game of hurling. English was educated locally and later attended New Ross CBS where he first tasted hurling success.

Playing career

Club

English played his club hurling with the famous Rathnure club in Wexford. He enjoyed much success year over a fifteen-year career at senior level. English later transferred to the Erin’s Own club in Muine Bheag.

Inter-county

English first played for Wexford in the 1950 Leinster minor championship against Kilkenny. The following year he joined the senior side and was a substitute when Wexford won the Leinster Championship title, however, they were beaten by Tipperary in the All-Ireland final. Three years later in 1954 English was a full member of the team. That year he won his first Leinster title, however, Wexford lost out to Cork in the All-Ireland final. In 1955 he captured his second provincial title. Once again Wexford qualified for the All-Ireland final, however, on this occasion English ended the day with an All-Ireland medal following a win over Galway.

In 1956 English was captain of Wexford as his native-county claimed a National Hurling League title and a third Leinster title in-a-row. Wexford later played Cork in one of the most famous All-Ireland finals of all-time. It was the day that an Art Foley save denied Christy Ring a ninth All-Ireland medal. English, on the other hand, ended the day with a second All-Ireland medal. In 1958 he won his second National League medal before winning a fourth Leinster medal in 1960. That year English also captured his third All-Ireland medal following a win over Tipperary. He retired from inter-county hurling in 1962. His other honours include two Railway Cup medals with Leinster.

Retirement

In retirement from play English maintained a keen interest in hurling. In 1972 he was elected Leinster Council delegate for Carlow, serving in that position until 1992. That year English became Chairman of the Carlow County Board.

Jim english died on February 23, 2008.
