Hugh Shaw

Major General Hugh Shaw VC, CB (Madras 4 February 1839 - Southsea 25 August 1904) was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Details

He was 25 years old, and a Captain in the 18th Regiment (later Royal Irish Regiment), British Army during the Waikato-Hauhau Maori War, New Zealand when, on 24 January 1865 at Nukumaru, New Zealand, Captain Shaw went, under heavy fire, with four privates who had volunteered to accompany him, to within 30 yards of that part of the bush occupied by the rebels, in order to rescue a comrade who was severely wounded. He later achieved the rank of Major general. His Victoria Cross is displayed at the National Army Museum.
