Richard Pockrich (inventor)

Richard Pockrich (inventor)

Richard Pockrich ("aka" Poekrich) [ODNB] (c.1690–1759) was the eccentric inventor of the Angelic organ in 1741. He was born at his family's estate Derrylusk, Co. Monaghan, Ireland, where they had their estate and extensive property. His father, also named Richard, was the member of Parliament for Monaghan.

Pockrich proposed an act decreeing that `anyone attaining the age of 999 years shall be deemed...dead in law'. Despite this, he failed to be elected either time he ran for Parliament (1745 Monaghan and 1749 Dublin).

His unsuccessful businesses included a brewery in Dublin and raising geese in County Wicklow.

He lobbied Parliament for the planting vineyards in the Irish bogs.

He proposed the development of metal hulled ships over 100 years before their eventual introduction.
