Louis, 4th duc de Noailles

Louis, 4th duc de Noailles

Louis, 4th duc de Noailles (21 April 1713 at Versailles – 22 August
1793 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France) was a French noble.

He bore the title of duc d'Ayen until his father's death in 1766, when he became duc de Noailles. He married Cathérine Françoise Charlotte de Cossé-Brissac, with whom he had two sons and two daughters. He served in most of the wars of the eighteenth century without particular distinction, but was nevertheless made a marshal of France in 1775. He refused to emigrate during the Revolution.

His wife, a granddaughter, and daughter-in-law were guillotined on 22 July 1794. Another granddaughter, Adrienne, wife of the Marquis de LaFayette, was saved due to the efforts of James Monroe, then-America's Minister to France. Louis de Noailles was succeeded by his eldest son, Jean-Paul-François. The titles remain among the 4th duke's descendants in the 21st century.
