New San Mamés Stadium

The New San Mamés Stadium is a provisional name for a planned new football (soccer) stadium in Bilbao, Spain. The stadium will be the new home of Athletic Bilbao football team, and will replace the current San Mamés Stadium.The project was approved in March 2006. Construction is due to start in 2008, and the cost is estimated to be at least €240 million. The stadium will have an all-seater capacity of 58,000. [ [http://www.fussballtempel.net/uefa/ESP.html www.fussballtempel.net] ] The new stadium will be built next to the existing San Mamés on land that was occupied until 2003 by the Bilbao International Trade Fair. Three quarters of the new stadium will be built and then matches will take place in the new stadium, and the old one will be demolished. Part of the campus of the University of the Basque Country will be demolished to make way for the stadium.
