St Martin’s le Grand is a street in the
City of London between Newgate Street andCheapside to the south and Aldersgate Street andLondon Wall to the north.In
750 the Saxon collegiate church of St. Martin was built. It was rebuilt in1056 , and its precincts were granted the privilege of sanctuary. The church was responsible for the sounding of the curfew bell in the evenings, which announced the closing of the City's gates. It was dissolved byHenry VIII and was demolished in1548 .
