Robert Aymar

Robert Aymar is the current Director General of CERN (2004-end of 2008), serving a five year term in that role.

Personal History

Dr. Aymar was born in 1936 and is of French nationality.

Professional History

He became involved in the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA), the French atomic energy commission, in 1959. Aymar directed the Tore Supra from conception in 1977 through to the start of operations in 1988. 1990 saw his appointment as Head of the Sciences of Matter Directorate of the CEA. Thereafter he served as director of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) from 1994-2003 before his current position as CERN's Director General.
