Roland H. Hartley

Roland Hill Hartley (born June 26, 1864-September 21, 1952) served two terms as the governor of the state of Washington from 1925 to 1933 as a Republican.

Early life

Born in Shogomoc, New Brunswick, June 26, 1864. Son of Rev. Edward Hartley and Rebecca Barker (Whitehead) Hartley; married 1888 to Nina M. Clough.

Politics

Mayor of Everett, Washington, 1910-12 for one term. Member of Washington state house of representatives, 1915-16;

The gavel used for Hartley's swearing in ceremony was the same gavel used by his father-in-law Governor David Clough of Minnesota for his swearing in.10th Governor of Washington, 1925-33. Hartley’s major accomplishments during his governorship were the creation of a centralized state highway department and new state timber laws.

Hartley died in Seattle, Washington, September 21, 1952 and is interred at Evergreen Cemetery, Everett, Wash.
