Tommy Byrne (footballer)

Tommy Byrne (born Dublin, August 30 1969) was an Irish soccer player during the 1990s and 2000s.

Byrne was a tough tackling defender or midfielder who began his career as a trainee at Chelsea but never made the breakthrough to the first team.He played a number of friendlies and seemed likely to play in the 1st Division but a change in manager from John Hollins to Bobby Campbell saw him exit the bridge along with future Scottish international Billy Dodds. He went on to play for FC Boom in Belgium before signing for Bohemians and playing in the 92 Cup winning team. He had also had spells at Shelbourne, Kilkenny and Dundalk.

He represented Ireland at underage and Under-21 levels (captaining the side at under 15, 16, 17 and 18) and also the Irish Army Football team.
