- BBC Programme Catalogue
The BBC Programme Catalogue was a
prototype onlinearchive of the entireBBC back catalogue of TV and radio programmes. The catalogue was originally for internal use by the BBC but the online version could be seen by the public. "The catalogue is not a complete record of every BBC programme" since certain categories of programme were not catalogued or no longer exist. The online version consisted of the cataloguing information only, and hyperlinks within it, and not links to any audio or video itself. The online trial has now finished.
A future version may include a
video on demand feature to allows users to download programmes within the back catalogue, a related system already exists for recent BBC TV programming callediPlayer .The catalogue did not include entries for programmes where no copies of the programme are known to still exist. Nor did it include entries for sport because the BBC did not necessarily own the rights. However every individual news item was separately catalogued since these had a high re-use value (e.g. use of archive footage of historical news items within present-day news programmes or documentaries).
The BBC is examining how to incorporate the cataloguing information into its other Web pages.
