Seabeet is a subspecies of beet, "Beta vulgaris" subsp. "maritima" (L.) Arcangeli. [Lange, W., W. A. Brandenburg and T.S.M. De Bock. 1999. Taxonomy and cultonomy of beet (Beta vulgaris L.). Botanical J. of the Linnean Society 130:81-96.] . It is native to the coasts of Europe, northern Africa, and southern Asia. It is specially adapted to live near the sea because its leaves are waxy and can endure the salty breeze. The leaves are edible and because of this, this plant is also known as wild spinach.
