- Francis Cromie
Captain ("Acting".) Francis Newton Allen Cromie, CB, DSO, (January 30 ,1882 –August 31 ,1918 ,Petrograd ) was the commander of theBritish submarine flotilla in the Baltic duringWorld War I . He joined theRoyal Navy Submarine Service in 1903. In 1915 he navigated the submarineHMS E19 throughOresund into theBaltic Sea , to prey oniron ore transports fromSweden toImperial Germany . In May 1917 he was appointed thenaval attaché in Petrograd (now known asSaint Petersburg ).On
August 31 ,1918 he was shot in front of theBritish Embassy in Petrograd by a group from theCheka who were trying to break the British intelligence network there. He is buried at theArchangel Memorial in Saint Petersburg.
