Frederick Hackett

Frederick Hackett

The Hon. Frederick Hackett (1902 – 19 March 1963) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party.

Member of Parliament

He was the Member of Parliament for Grey Lynn from 1943 to 1963, when he died. He replaced John A. Lee in the seat when Lee was expelled from the Labour Party.

Cabinet Minister

He was a cabinet minister in the Fraser Ministry of the First Labour Government of 1946 - 1949: Postmaster-General and Minister of Telegraphs, Minister in charge of the Public Trust Office, State Fire Insurance and Government Life Insurance Department. In the Second Labour Government of 1957 - 1960 he was Minister of Labour, Mines and Immigration.

Walter Nash favoured Gerry Skinner and then Hackett to replace him when he retired after the 1960 election, see New Zealand general election, 1963, but with the untimely deaths of first Skinner and then Hackett, Nash was replaced by Arnold Nordmeyer.
