United Country Party

United Country Party

The United Country Party was a minor political party in the United Kingdom during the 1970s. They were against immigration, inflation and the excesses of the 'Winter of Discontent', claiming to represent 'people with common sense'. Although the reports that he founded the party were erroneous, noted astronomer Patrick Moore was nonetheless party chairman [http://www.guardian.co.uk/eclipse/Story/0,,205668,00.html] . The party arose out of the perceived weakness of James Callaghan and the right wing frustration at Edward Heath's leadership of the Conservative Party. As such, Margaret Thatcher becoming Prime Minister signalled the party's end.

During the 1979 general election, they stood two candidates who received 1,033 votes between them. Both candidates lost their deposit [http://www.psr.keele.ac.uk/area/uk/ge79/partycand.htm] .

The right-wing New Britain Party absorbed them in 1980 [http://news.independent.co.uk/media/article2521676.ece] .
