Herbert Rhodes

Herbert Edward Rhodes (January 11, 1852September 10, 1889) was a first-class cricketer who played 10 first class matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 1878 to 1883 and 25 matches overall for teams including Marylebone Cricket Club (1878-1883), England XI (1879), AW Ridley's XI (1879), Gentlemen of England (1881-1882) and Orleans Club (1883). He played for Warwickshire in 1890 in non first class cricket.

He was a right handed batsman and wicket keeper who took 14 catches and completed 2 stumpings in all first class cricket. He scored 424 runs at 11.45 with a best of 64 against I Zingari.

He was educated at Eton and went up to Jesus College, Cambridge. He did not play in any first-class cricket while at university but he was the stroke of the Cambridge boat in 1873, 1874 and 1875 and he rowed No.7 in 1876. Much of his later cricket was for Henley CC and the MCC. He was due to tour India with Vernon’s team in the winter of 1889/90, but just before he was due to leave he suffered a fatal accident when he fell off his horse.

He was born at Hennerton House, Berkshire and died in Dover, Kent aged 37.
