Azucena Berruti

Azucena Berruti

Azucena Berrutti (b. 1929), a famous lawyer and Uruguayan politician [ 'Azucena Berruti', Wikipedia (in Spanish) [http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azucena_Berrutti] ] , she was the National Defence Minister, appointed by the Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez, from March 2005 until March 2008.

Background and political alignment

She was graduated from law school at the age of 29 in 1958. Eight years before she started working in the Government of Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, in the administration area. As she was afiliated at Socialist Party of Uruguay, she was fired because of Uruguayan dictatorship, from 1973 to 1984.

When the dictatorship finally ends, in 1984, Berruti could come back to work in the Government of Montevideo but a little while later she finally retired from work. In the event she returned to work there when Tabaré Vázquez was elected to be Governor of Montevideo in 1990, she was in charge of the General Secretary of the Government.

Appointment as Defence Minister, 2005

At the age of 75, Berruti, assumed one of the most controversial ministry nowadays in Uruguay, when Tabaré Vázquez became President of Uruguay. She is the first woman in this position.

In 2008 Berruti was facing challenges by the Movement of Popular Participation (MPP) deputy Juan Domínguez, ostensibly a colleague in the ruling Frente Amplio coalition, and others in controversies surrounding defence procurement and the Nin brothers (Vice President of Uruguay Rodolfo Nin Novoa and his chief of staff Gonzalo Nin Novoa). It was thought that the dilemma faced by Berruti was her personal loyalty to President of Uruguay Tabaré Vázquez, principally responsible for the cohesion of the ruling coalition, against the marked lack of empathy among some of the MPP toward issues relating to the business profitablity of defence contractors [ [http://uruguayescribe.com/2007/12/07/la-derecha-y-el-tema-nin-novoa/] ] .
