Baron Slane

Baron Slane

Baron Slane is a Barony in the Peerage of Ireland It was created in 1370 for the Fleming family but forfeited 1691.Baron Slane was a member in the Lords of the Patriot Parliament of 1689

At the time of the Anglo-Norman Invasion Henry II granted to Hugh de Lacey the lands of O'Melaghlin, king of Meath in return for the service of 50 Knights. In turn de Lacy shared some land among his subordinates ('de Lacy's barons').

As two of de Lacy's barons, Richard and Thomas Fleming received Crandon and other land. The descendants of the Flemings became barons of Slane; another family branch becoming viscounts of Longford.

On the west side of the hill of Slane there are the remains of a twelfth century motte and bailey which was the seat of the Flemings, barons of Slane.

The Flemings moved to a castle on the left bank of the River Boyne. This is the current location of Slane Castle. The Flemings were lords of Slane from the twelfth century until seventeenth century when they were disinherited during the Williamite Confiscations
