Richard Tuite

Richard Tuite

Richard Tuite is an American murderer convicted of stabbing to death 12-year-old Stephanie Crowe in her bedroom in Escondido, California, in January 20, 1998. [http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20040527/news_1n27tuite.html Tuite found guilty of manslaughter] Tuite was found guilty in May 26, 2004.

Initially, Stephanie's brother, Michael Crowe, was main suspect for the murder. He was targeted by Escondido police when he seemed "distant and preoccupied" after Stephanie's body was discovered and the rest of the family grieved. After intense interrogation he gave an false confession and police didn't want to admit the mistake, so that's why it took six years to convict Richard Tuite. Tuite was initially dismissed as a suspect because he was thought to be incapable of murder. However charges against Michael Crowe were dropped after DNA testing linked a neighborhood transient to Stephanie's blood.
