In June 2002 Caruana won the Pan-American Youth Championships (Boys under 10) in Argentina, earning the
FIDE Master title.In September 2002, he became the youngest American (and Italian) to defeat a Grandmaster (
Aleksander Wojtkiewicz ) in an official tournament - surpassing the record set byHikaru Nakamura .In 2003 Caruana again won the Pan-American Youth Championships (Boys Under 12) in Columbia.
In April 2006 he was awarded the
International Master title, and in December of that same year he became sub-champion of Italy.In March and April 2007, he earned two
Grandmaster norm s with performance ratings of 2634 and 2670. On July 15, 2007, Caruana became the youngest ever American (and Italian) Grandmaster – surpassing the record set byHikaru Nakamura .In August 2007, he won the strong HZ
Vlissingen Open with a performance rating of 2715.On December 4, 2007, he won the Italian championship with a score of 9½ out of 11 leading the field by three full points and a performance rating of 2740 to become the youngest Italian champion ever.
He currently lives in
Budapest with his family, and is the top-rated player inItaly .Rating
