Emanuel Levy film critic (Ph.D. Columbia University) belongs to a small group of critics/scholars who have effectively juggled two careers: as film professor and film critic (formerly senior critic at Variety and chief film critic for Screen International). Levy is a voting member of five influential groups: Hollywood Foreign Press (HFPA), Los Angeles Film Critics (LAFCA), Broadcast Film Critics (BFCA), National Society of Film Critics (NSFC), and the International Federation of Film Critics (Fipresci). He has served on the grand juries of 44 international film festivals, including Cannes, Venice, Montreal, Locarno, Taormina, San Francisco, Hawaii, and most recently Sundance Film Festival, with David O. Russell, Forest Whitaker, Tilda Swinton, and Steve Buscemi. Levy is the author of eight film books, the most recent of which is the first biography of Vincente Minnelli: Hollywood's Dark Dreamer, by St. Martin's Press. Other popular books include All About Oscar: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards and Cinema of Outsiders: The Rise of American Independent Film (the most widely read book in the 90-year-history of NYU Press)
