Tairua has long been a popular vacation choice with Kiwis and is now becoming increasingly visited by international tourists.
There are some first rate motels in Tairua as well as other types of accommodation.
Directly opposite Tairua on the south bank of the river's estuary is the smaller settlement of
Pauanui . The two settlements are 30 kilometres east of Thames although the town has closer connections with the sea side resort townWhangamata . Several islands lie off the mouth of the river, notablySlipper Island to the southeast and theAlderman Islands 20 kilometres to the east.The area is a popular holiday destination noted for
game fishing ,diving , andsurfing .Education
