Pratap Chidamber Chitnis, Baron Chitnis (born
1 May 1936 ) is a British manager. Between 1975 and 1988, he was chief executive and director of the Liberal Party.The son of Chidamber N. Chitnis and Lucia Mallik, he was educated at
Stonyhurst College . He was further educated at theUniversity of Birmingham , where he graduated with aBachelor of Arts and at theUniversity of Kansas , where he graduated with a Master of Arts.Chitnis was administration assistant of the
National Coal Board from 1958 to 1959 and member of theCommunity Relations Commission from 1970 to 1977. For theJoseph Rowntree Social Service Trust , he was secretary from 1969 to 1975 and chief executive and director from 1975 to 1988. He was a member of theBBC Asian Programme Advice Committee between 1972 and 1977, and its chairman between 1979 and 1983. From 1981 to 1986, Chitnis was chairman ofRefugee Action and from 1986 to 1989 of theBritish Refugee Council . On18 July 1977 , he was made alife peer as Baron Chitnis, of Rydale in the County ofNorth Yorkshire .Since 1964 he has been married to Anne Brand, daughter of Frank Mansell Brand. They had one son, who has already died.
