Jamalul D. Kiram III is the current
Sultan of Sulu inSulu , southern Philippines. He was a candidate for senator in the2007 Philippine Elections .Born on
July 16 ,1938 inMaimbung, Sulu , he is the eldest son of the lateSultan Punjungan Kiram andSharif Usna Dalus Strattan (both parents areSulu royalties). He's from the direct lineage of the firstSultan of Sulu ,Sultan Shariful Hashim from theBano-Hashimite tribe , the direct descendants ofMuhammad .He's a member of the
Ruma Betchara (Council of the Sultan) during the reign of his late uncle,Sultan Esmail Kiram (1962-1974).He acted as "Interim Sultan" during the absence of his father Sultan Punjungan Kiram while in
Sabah (1974- 1981) and proclaimed in 1984 as 33rdSultan of Sulu and was crowned onJune 15 ,1986 inJolo, Sulu .He studied in
Jolo Central Elementary School from 1946-1951. He finished high school at theSulu High School in 1955 and took-up pre-law from 1956-1958 atNotre Dame of Jolo . He became aBachelor of Law atManuel Luis Quezon University (MLQU) in 1964.Kiram forged the century-old relationships between
Sulu andChina during the royal visit inDezhou ,Shandong Province , PRChina in September 1999 with 87-man entourage. The visit concluded with the signing of the agreement betweenHebei Province and the Sulu Sultanate on agricultural technology exchange.He also forged bilateral relationship between the
Don Sasagawa Foundation of Japan and theSultan Jamalul Ahlam Foundation .Sultan Jamalul Ahlam was the recipient of various hospital equipments fromJapan which were in turn donated to theSulu Provincial Hospital in 1992.He is the one responsible for the release of the American and the German nationals from the captivity of the lost command of the MNLF in 1984.
He established livelihood programs in
Sulu ,Tawi-Tawi andPalawan through theSulu-Marine andSeven Seas Corporations .He is married to
Dayang Hadja Fatima Celia H. Kiram .ee also
